Three people have died and one is hospitalized with serious injuries following a head-on collision on Route 14 in Albany, Vermont State Police said.

At about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to a preliminary report, a Chevrolet Sonic was traveling south on Route 14 when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle by crossing into the northbound lane, police said in a Thursday night press release. The driver “collided head-on” with a Honda Accord that was traveling north, police said.

The Chevrolet Sonic’s driver, June Cleveland, 80, and a passenger, Linda Major, 59, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda Accord, Jason Sanville, 46, was extricated from that vehicle but was pronounced dead “shortly thereafter despite lifesaving efforts,” police said. A passenger in the Honda Accord, Cricket Santamore, 38, was airlifted to University of Vermont Medical Center and was listed in stable condition with serious injuries as of Thursday night.

All four lived in Albany.

The incident resulted in a road closure that lasted about three and a half hours on Route 14 near Griggs Road.

The crash remains under investigation.
