William “Bill” Wylie, 87, passed away at home on March 27th with his loving family at his side. Born on October 30th, 1935, in Barre, Vermont, Bill was the son of William Wylie and Margaret Meldrum Wylie.
At age 5, Bill’s family moved to Poquonock, CT where he attended school and graduated in 1952 from Windsor High School in Windsor, CT.
In 1954, Bill married Merlene Wilcox and started an excavating business. Duty called, and in 1957 at the age of 22, Bill was recruited into the US army serving in Germany in the same company as Elvis Presley. Bill and Merlene Wilcox were the parents of, William Wylie (Kathy Pratte), Merle Wylie Love (Ray Love) and John Wylie (Joyce Behrens). The young family moved to Chester, VT. in 1968 where Bill began a long and successful construction career, first with RAB Construction and then at his own company, Wylie Construction.
Bill met Stephanie Healy in Stowe, VT and they married in 1974. They settled in South Londonderry, VT where they raised their two children, Joshua Wylie (Jamie Kingsbury) and Blair Wylie Wicher (Christopher Wicher), often joined by their older brothers and sister. Bill was an active and generous member of the Londonderry community. He served on the School Board for 8 years and served two terms as a Selectman for the town of Londonderry and was also a member of the planning commission.
Bill built numerous private homes and condominiums in the Stratton Mountain area, meeting lifelong friends along the way. Wylie Constructionalso built several commercial properties, including the Winhall Fire Department, and additions onto the Mountain Valley Medical Center as well as The Otis Clinic on Stratton Mountain.
Bill loved his work as well as the outdoors. He was a golfer and a member of the Dorset Field Club, a skier, boater, hiker, and a pilot. Bill acquired his private pilot’s license in 1970 and was a familiar sight flying his helicopter in the skies above southern Vermont.
Aside from his family, of primary importance to Bill were his friends. He loved Friday night drinks, dinners out and breakfast at the Maple Leaf Dinner (Stoddards) where he met old friends and enjoyed the company of new ones. Bill was gregarious, adventuresome, a great parent and grandfather who delighted in sharing photographs of his 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Bill is also survived by his sister Debby Wylie Silliman (John Silliman). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mountain Valley Health Center or the Londonderry Rescue Squad.
