Massachusetts bigwig William Brattle was indeed an enslaver, but he was not a “southern colonel,” as Judy Dow and Mia Schulz recently called him in your columns.
Brattleboro sports teams retired a Colonel Sanders-like (but scrawnier) mascot 20 years ago, but have retained the “Colonels” name.
They play on fields where Union soldiers drilled during the Civil War. Perhaps they would have better luck there if they left the Lost Cause name behind.
