A 52-year-old woman, Helvi Abatiell Furlan, died early Sunday after being injured in a house fire in Mendon, according to Vermont State Police.

Two children, ages 11 and 17, and a dog, were unharmed by the fire.

A woman called emergency services at 11:42 p.m. on Saturday to report that she was in a fire but then stopped responding to the dispatcher, according to a state police press release issued Monday.

“Emergency crews including two state troopers and members of the Rutland Fire Department located Abatiell Furlan inside the home and carried her out of the burning residence and to an ambulance,” police said.

She was pronounced dead at Rutland Regional Medical Center early Sunday morning, according to state police.

Officials said the fire on Old Stockbridge Path appears to have originated near a chimney and wood-burning furnace.

Early investigation shows the fire likely was accidental, police said, and Abatiell Furlan’s death is not considered suspicious.
