COLCHESTER — Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that led to the death of a married couple Wednesday night in Colchester.

At 9:43 p.m., a neighbor reported a fight and a loud bang in an apartment on Holy Cross Road. Colchester police responded and found a man and a woman dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

The couple was later identified as Melissa and Michael Bergeron, who were both 37. Police Chief Douglas Allen told VTDigger that initial findings indicate the man shot the woman and then shot himself. A handgun was recovered at the scene, he added.

A child who was at the scene was unharmed and is with relatives, Allen said.

“Neighbors called it in after the child ran to their apartment,” he said.

An autopsy is pending, police said.

At 11:15 a.m. Thursday, yellow police tape cordoned off the scene, at the Wellesley Condominiums at 259 Holy Cross Road, where Allen held a brief press conference.
