The suspect in a Burlington shooting on Sunday has denied a charge of attempted murder.

Tovi Mesick, 40, of Jeffersonville, pleaded not guilty on Monday during a hearing in Chittenden County Superior criminal court.

Mesick was arrested Sunday night after allegedly shooting 44-year-old Stephen Furtado at the Salmon Run apartments on Riverside Avenue, according to a police affidavit.

According to the affidavit, written by Burlington Detective Cpl. Krystal Wrinn, the victim’s wife said Mesick had been staying in the couple’s apartment. Heather Furtado said she heard an argument between Mesick and her husband during which her husband asked Mesick to leave the apartment. She then heard a loud noise and found Stephen Furtado had been shot, the affidavit stated.

Police said Stephen Furtado, who was shot in the chest, received medical care and was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center by firefighters with the Burlington Fire Department. Police said Stephen Furtado was speaking with officers while being moved to the ambulance.

In a press release on Monday morning, Burlington police said Stephen Furtado was in stable condition.

In the affidavit, police said that following the shooting, Mesick fled the scene on foot. Police requested a dog from Essex Police to track the suspect, but Mesick was later stopped by Winooski police and arrested.
