A 44-year-old man was hospitalized following a Sunday night shooting on Riverside Avenue in Burlington.
Acting Police Chief Jon Murad said the person was shot in the chest at the Salmon Run Apartments at 220 Riverside Avenue in Burlington around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Following the shooting, the suspect ran from the scene, according to Murad. In a press release issued early Monday morning, Burlington police said that person had been apprehended in Winooski within half an hour of the shooting. Police identified the suspect as Tovi R. Mesick, 40, of Cambridge.
Mesick could face a charge of attempted murder, police said in the Monday morning press release.
Speaking near the Riverside Avenue scene Sunday night, Murad said, “It’s a person who is known to us and also to law enforcement partners in the region, including our federal partners.”
Police did not identify the male victim, who had been accompanied by a 41-year-old woman. In a separate press release issued late Sunday night, Murad said the victim was in stable condition.
The Burlington Fire Department responded to the incident and transported the victim by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Around 7:00 p.m. Sunday, officers with a police dog were seen searching the Salmon Run parking lot. The dog eventually followed a scent down the sidewalk on Riverside Avenue toward Winooski. However, Murad said he thought the shooting suspect was actually arrested before the dog finished its tracking.
Murad said the police dog was requested and supplied by Essex Police. Officers from the University of Vermont Police Department were on scene as well.
