A Burlington man died at the hospital Tuesday morning after attempting suicide the night before while incarcerated at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Vermont State Police said.

Shawn Gero, 29, suffered life-threatening injuries at around 9:30 p.m. Monday at the prison in what officials believe was an effort to take his own life, according to a police press release.

Department of Corrections staff made attempts to save Gero’s life, police said, after which he was transported to the nearby Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, and later to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

Police said they began an investigation at the prison, and on Tuesday morning, were notified that Gero had been pronounced dead at the Burlington hospital.

Gero had been in custody since December 2022, when he was arrested and charged with felony domestic assault, according to state police.

Police said no additional information was available as of Tuesday evening.
