BELVIDERE — One man is dead and another is in custody following a shooting in the Lamoille County town of Belvidere, according to authorities.
Vermont State Police spokesperson Adam Silverman said Mark P. Benjamin, 42, of Brownington, fled the scene in a vehicle after he was shot outside a camp on Bog Road shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday. He died about two miles up the dirt road.
The suspect, Michael Chadwick, 61, also of Brownington, then holed himself up in the camp for about two hours before agreeing to surrender to police around 4:30 p.m. without further incident, Silverman said.
Chadwick was arrested early Thursday morning on a charge of second-degree murder and was expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Lamoille County Superior criminal court in Hyde Park.
Chadwick was involved with Benjamin’s mother in a long-term relationship that had recently ended, according to a state police press release issued early Thursday morning.
The shooting took place at a seasonal camp at 2190 Bog Road that is owned by Benjamin’s mother.
Benjamin, accompanied by his husband, encountered Chadwick at the camp at about 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, police said in the release. At the camp, Chadwick fired a handgun at Benjamin, striking him, according to state police.
Benjamin was able to get into a vehicle driven by his husband, who called 911 and drove away from the scene. They stopped the vehicle at a home south of the intersection of Bog Road and Vermont Route 109, where Benjamin was pronounced dead by emergency medical services responders at 2:40 p.m., according to the release.
State police alerted the public shortly before 4 p.m. that troopers were responding to “an emergency situation involving a reported shooting” in the vicinity of Bog Road. They warned people to avoid the area. Police declared the scene “no longer active” about two hours later.
At the scene, police on Wednesday evening appeared to be investigating the two separate areas on Bog Road — one where the shooting took place, which included the camp and a small red car parked at the foot of the driveway, and the other involving a parked SUV up the road.
