Covid cases in Barre City and Barre Town doubled in just a week, the latest sign of Washington County’s outsized rise in the latest wave of the pandemic, state data shows.
The current rise in cases began in October and was linked to an outbreak from an ice rink in Montpelier. That outbreak hit numerous schools, workplaces and St. Michael’s College before topping out at about 124 cases, state officials said at a press conference Friday.
But Washington County continues to have the highest number of new cases among Vermont’s 14 counties in recent weeks. Washington County has had 351 cases in the past 14 days, compared to 245 in the state’s most populous area, Chittenden County.
And Barre seems to have been the epicenter of that Washington County rise. Barre City went from 99 cases to 202 cases in a week, and Barre Town went from nine cases to 24 cases in a week. That’s a doubling rate of seven days. Cases also rose in Northfield and Montpelier.
Elsewhere, St. Johnsbury, Williamstown and Morristown also had a high percentage increase in their cases. Burlington and Rutland City also had a high number of total cases reported, although their percentage change was lower because they have bigger populations.
