Candidates for Governor Forum on VT Youth 4:00 – 6:30 Sun Sep 25
Youth are the future of Vermont. On Sunday, September 25th, the nominees for governor of Vermont will be at Damon Hall in Hartland for a forum on Youth Issues, moderated by Anne Galloway of VTDigger. Candidates expected are Phil Scott, Republican nominee and Sue Minter, Democratic nominee. The forum is hosted by Windsor County Partners, a non-profit organization which has been building healthy Vermont communities through youth mentoring for 42 years.
The focus of the forum will be issues related to school-aged Vermont youth and their families. Youth issues to be addressed include: youth activities; risky behaviors; school attendance & education; volunteerism & youth leadership; and work-readiness & civic engagement as adults. Youth are welcome to attend and be a part of our state’s political process. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions to the candidates.
Citizen engagement in support of our youth is critical to their future success as adults. Research has found that youth who drop out of school are twice as likely to report that they felt that they had no one that they could reach out to for help. The same research found that nearly all dropouts who later re-entered school reported “someone encouraged me to return”. (GradNation.org) Local residents are encouraged to come out in support of our local youth.
Local businesses have underwritten the cost of a program booklet featuring the relevant youth issues, which will be available at the event. In addition to the program underwriters, forum business sponsors include Chelsea Green Publishing and the Co-op Food Stores.
The evening starts with a reception at 4 pm, followed by the forum from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. The reception is by donation to support youth mentoring (suggested donation $10). The forum is free. Both events are open to the public.
