People’s United Bank awards $15,000 to Boys & Girls Club of Burlington

BURLINGTON, VT – The Boys & Girls Club of Burlington is very pleased to announce that it has received a $15,000 award from People’s United Bank. This award supports the Club’s Early Promise program, a program of educational supports that help Club members be successful in school and to prepare them for education beyond high school.

“People’s United Bank has been an outstanding partner as we work to break the cycle of poverty and create a successful future for our youth. They were the very first corporate supporter of our Early Promise program and have been with us every step of the way since then” said Mary Alice McKenzie, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club.

Early Promise encompasses a wide range of educational components, all contributing to the Club’s overall mission of improving their members’ academic performance while keeping them safe from harmful influences. The program serves 175 young people each day through a total of ten academic improvement offerings.

“The Club knows that with proper support in place, low-income, at-risk children can obtain post-secondary education. When their Early Promise program started, the Club had no teen members who aspired to access education beyond high school. As of this past spring, three Club members have graduated from college and another fifteen Club members are currently in college,” said Kathy Schirling, People’s United Bank Director of Marketing and Community Services.

“The Boys & Girls Club has a measurable impact on the lives of deserving youth,” said Michael Seaver, President, People’s United Bank Vermont. “We are proud to be part of the Club’s mission of teaching children how to create their own great future.”
