Northbound Amtrak service between Washington, D.C., and St. Albans will resume Thursday following Monday’s derailment near Northfield, Amtrak officials said Wednesday.
Southbound service will remain disrupted as workers clean up the site of the Amtrak Vermonter derailment Monday. No one was seriously hurt in that accident, which occurred when the train encountered a rockslide on the tracks.
Southbound passengers boarding north of Springfield will be provided bus transportation to Springfield or New Haven, Connecticut, where they can board other trains.
Passengers may call 800-USA-RAIL for more information.
Gov. Peter Shumlin issued the following statement:
“I want to thank everyone who worked so hard over the past two days to ensure Monday’s derailment caused as little disruption as possible. From the first responders who rushed to the scene to the Norwich University personnel who took in and fed stranded passengers to all those who helped clear the derailed cars and repair the tracks, I want to extend my sincere gratitude. Vermonters reacted to this situation with characteristic community spirit and hospitality, and I am pleased service is being restored in advance of what should a great weekend to see Vermont’s world famous foliage.”
