Company proposes 12th rate decrease since January 2012

South Burlington, Vt. – Nearly 50,000 Vermont Gas customers could see their natural gas bills decrease for the 12th time since January 2012. The company announced today it has proposed an overall rate decrease of 3% to the Public Service Board for rates that would go into effect November 1, 2015. The decrease will provide needed savings to businesses and families this winter.

“Keeping our rates competitive and affordable is at the core of our work at Vermont Gas. We are pleased to announce that we have proposed an additional rate decrease, helping our customers save more as they heat their homes and businesses this winter,” said Don Rendall, President and CEO of Vermont Gas Systems. “For almost 50 years Vermont Gas has provided a clean and affordable home heating solution to folks in Chittenden and Franklin counties and we’re committed to offering the choice of natural gas to more Vermonters in the future.”

Since January 2012 Vermont Gas customers’ rates have decreased more than 15%. The proposed decrease announced today would save the average Vermont Gas household approximately $30.00/year. The savings would be significantly higher for businesses that use more energy.

Based on today’sprices, natural gas is 43% cheaper than propane and 18% less expensive than heating oil. In addition, Vermont Gas customers in the past year saved almost $14 million by participating in the company’s nationally recognized energy efficiency programs. By switching to natural gas from heating oil and propane, customers prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to about 6% of the emissions from all of Vermont’s cars and light trucks. Natural gas is also a reliable heating energy source during storms and power outages.
