Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is within striking distance of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Iowa. Thirty percent of Iowans polled by Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa said they would vote for Sanders. Thirty-seven percent said they would cast ballots for Clinton.
Since May, Clinton’s support has dropped by a third. That month she had the backing of 57 percent of survey respondents. On Saturday, her support dropped to 37 percent.
Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co., which conducted the poll, said “anytime you lose that much that quickly it’s a wake-up call.”
Sanders, meanwhile, has seen a 14 percent gain in Iowa since May, according to the survey.
A similar group of “young people, liberals and first-time caucus-goers” who backed President Barack Obama are supporting the Vermont senator, according to Bloomberg.
Two weeks ago, Sanders bested Clinton in a poll conducted of New Hampshire voters.
