Secretary of State Jim Condos will conduct a random audit of election results from six towns Thursday.

The audit will be performed using new technology from Clear Ballot Group, Condos said in a news release Monday. The new system will allow for faster retabulation and will allow more towns to be randomly audited than in past elections, Condos said.

Results of the Nov. 4 General Election from East Montpelier, Fayston, Manchester, St. Johnsbury, Westminster and Wolcott will be scanned to retabulate the ballots and compare them to the reported returns, the release said.

Condos said the system might one day assist with recounts.

“Voting is one of the most important responsibilities and privileges that comes with being a citizen. Ensuring the election process is both honest and accurate is as important as voting itself,” Condos said in the release.

The audit will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at Montpelier City Hall.
