Operators of a Milton salvage yard agreed to remove junk cars from their property and pay a $4,500 penalty under a settlement with the state.

The Department of Environmental Conservation found that McRae Auto/Wrecker Service, owned by George and Patricia McRae, did not have the proper state or municipal permits to operate a salvage yard.

After negotiations with the owners to remedy the situation fell apart, the state filed an administrative order in environmental court. The settlement announced Tuesday averted a trial, state officials said in a news release.

Under the settlement, the McRaes agreed to remove junk and jun motor vehicles from the property on Middle Road by Aug. 1. They also agreed not to operate a salvage yard on the property until all permits are issued.
