What does it take to feed 500 hungry runners the night before a race?
100 pounds of pasta and 50 gallons of alfredo, meat and tomato sauces, hours of chopping and dicing of vegetables for the primavera pasta and salad bar, multiple phone calls and emails to generous donors who provide the ingredients and restaurants who make and donate the sauces, some tense hand wringing and crossing of fingers, then it is show time! The doors are thrown open and 500 runners and their friends and families sit down at set tables complete with flowers donated by a local garden center to one amazing and truly delicious pasta dinner.
“It’s not easy,” laughs Patrick Crowl, owner of the Woodstock Farmers’ Market, who has coordinated the event for several years now for Woodstock Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s Pasta Dinner is the race’s sanctioned dinner the eve before the sold out Covered Bridge Half Marathon, June 1, 2014. “But thanks to my great WFM staff, many event volunteers, generous donations of all of the ingredients, sauces prepared and donated by area restaurants, it all gets done—and it’s a blast. The biggie for me is that it raises serious money for local charities and the Chamber; and frankly it’s just very rewarding to be a part of this wonderful Chamber tradition,” explained Crowl.
There are still some spaces left for the 5, or 7 p.m. seatings (6 p.m. seating is sold out) for the Covered Bridges Half Marathon Pasta Supper at the beautiful Suicide Six Ski area lodge, where the race starts the following day. The tickets are Adults $18 and Children ages 3-12 $10. There is also live entertainment and an exciting raffle. According to the Covered Bridge Half Marathon’s website the race, now in its 23rd year with over 2,000 runners, is organized by a completely volunteer staff, under the corporate umbrella of CBHM, Inc., a non-profit corporation formed specifically to organize running events and donate the proceeds to charity. The race donates more than $35,000 each year to local non-profit groups focused on youth activities and youth sports in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. In recent years, groups have used the race to inspire volunteers to seek pledges for their respective causes, raising as much as $130,000. The race committee has consciously limited the number of spots allocated to such efforts to maintain the feel and focus of the race itself. The Board of Directors of CBHM, Inc. include the race directors and representatives from the local area. Over 500 volunteers help make the race happen on race day, with many of the volunteers now in their 20th year at their posts.
The pasta dinner and the race raise funds for five local charities: David’s House, Team Alzheimers, Upper Valley Haven, Health Connections of the Upper Valley and The Family Place.
