Calling all middle and high school students looking to show off their skills in the kitchen: applications are now being accepted for Jr Iron Chef 2014! Jr Iron Chef VT is a statewide culinary competition that challenges teams of middle and high school students to create healthy, local dishes that inspire school meal programs. Teams consist of three to five students in 6-8th grade or 9-12th grade.
Applications will be accepted until January 15, 2014 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration closes at 72 teams. Two heats will be held the day of the competition, with 90 minutes of cooking time per heat. Winning teams receive great prize packages and have an opportunity to feature their recipes in the Vermont Statehouse Cafeteria.
Jr Iron Chef 2014 will be held on March 22 at the Champlain Valley Exposition Center, Essex Junction. Applications are available at www.jrironchefvt.org. For more information or to sponsor the event, contact [email protected]
Jr Iron Chef VT is hosted by the Burlington School Food Project and Vermont FEED. From the start, the event has been committed to providing middle and high school students with hands-on experience cooking nutritious, farm-fresh foods. When the event began in 2008, 35 teams participated. Last year, 314 students from every corner of the state competed on 74 teams. Establishing a connection to food—it’s origin and preparation—is a critical step towards developing lifelong healthy eating habits.
