POSTAL UNIONS and OCCUPIERS PROTEST POST OFFICE CLOSINGS

In the face of drastic cuts to postal service scheduled to start in mid-May, the American Postal Workers Union and the National Postal Mailhandlers Union are calling for leafleting and rallies on April 17th. Vermont will see the elimination of 15 rural post offices and the White River Junction mail plant, with potential loss of hundreds of jobs. Joining the postal unions to protest the lay-offs and loss of public services are Occupy Vermont groups, the Vermont AFL-CIO, Vermont State Employees Association, Vermont-NEA, the Vermont Workers Center among others.

The US Postal Service receives no federal tax dollars. A bill sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) currently pending in Congress would allow the postal service to modernize and diversify their services, which some have considered long overdue.

Patty Dewey, a postal worker at the mail processing plant in White River Junction, has been active in getting information out to the public for several months. “The common idea is that the Post Office is going broke because of the internet,” Dewey explained, “but it’s not that at all. The USPS is very profitable but Congress passed a law requiring that the USPS pre-fund 75 years’ worth of retirement obligations in a 10 year period…that costs more than $5 BILLION every year. The USPS response is to propose these drastic cuts. The ultimate goal is to starve the USPS and privatize our nation’s mail delivery system.”

Informational picketing will take place at five locations on April 17th, from 12:00 – 1:00 PM, and again from 4:30-6:00 PM. Owing to the size of the White River Junction processing plant, which directly employs more than 200 people, a protest will be maintained from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. In Burlington there will be a rally at the Post Office at 5:00 PM, which will be joined by a contingent from the Vermont Federation of Nurses’ local union at Fletcher Allen.
