PLYMOUTH NOTCH, Vt. – On Thursday July 4th, the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site celebrates the birth of the nation as well as its 30th president. The public is invited to gather at the village green at 12:00 Noon, when a delegation of the Vermont National Guard leads a march to the Plymouth Notch Cemetery. There, a wreath from the White House will be placed at the President’s gravesite; a brief ceremony follows with members of the Coolidge family in attendance.

Calvin Coolidge is the only U.S. president born on Independence Day, and the event has been commemorated at his birthplace in Plymouth Notch for many decades.

After the cemetery program, a chicken barbecue is held at the site’s restaurant, The Wilder House. Plymouth resident Fred DePaul offers wagon rides 10:00 – 5:00, and members of Fiber Arts in Vermont will showcase their latest project – a reproduction of a Coolidge family woolen blanket. Other highlights: George Ainley & Friends perform bluegrass music in the church at 1:30, and noted Civil War historian and author Howard Coffin speaks in the Coolidge Museum & Education Center at 3:00. The cemetery program and afternoon programs are organized by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation; for further information call 802-672-3389.

The public can tour twelve buildings at the Coolidge Site. At the Museum & Education Center, visitors can see the new permanent exhibition, More Than Two Words”: The Life and Legacy of Calvin Coolidge. This highly interactive exhibit is designed to appeal to visitors of all ages, providing an intimate and personal look into the life of the 30th President. Also at the Center is this season’s temporary exhibit, Rooting for the Home Team: Grace Coolidge and Our National Pastime, which features the site’s unique collection of Roaring Twenties baseball memorabilia.

A National Historic Landmark, Plymouth Notch is considered one of the best-preserved presidential sites in the country. The site is open daily through October 20, 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. For further information about other programs and special events, contact the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation at 802-672-3389; the Pres.
