City Councilor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak (P) will not be seeking reelection to the Burlington city council from Ward 3 in 2012. First elected in 2009, Mulvaney-Stanak has represented Wards 2 and 3 over the course of the last three years. Councilor Mulvaney-Stanak’s current term will be completed in April 2012.
“I am taking a temporary break from public service” said Councilor Mulvaney-Stanak. “I have always been passionate about government. I look forward to other opportunities to represent the people of Burlington in the near future. I learned a tremendous amount about the city and have great respect for the dedicated city employees and highly motivated residents, who collectively make Burlington one of the best places to live.”
During her three-year tenure, Councilor Mulvaney-Stanak served on the Community Development & Neighborhood Revitalization Committee, License Committee, and Public Safety Committee. She also served as the chair of the Sub-Board of Tax Abatement and was elected to the Board of Finance in 2011. Over her three years on the council, Councilor Mulvaney-Stanak championed city policy and resolutions for working people and social equity including:
· Introducing important revisions to the city’s livable wage ordinance;
· Sponsoring efforts to create a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) and workplace standards for the publicly funded Moran Redevelopment Project;
· Supporting a resolution calling for health care for all Vermonters;
· Championing a 2010 resolution condemning the Arizona SB1070 law which targets immigrants and is believed to increase racial profiling in that state;
· And leading the development city community standards for private-public partnerships on large-scale projects such as climate change initiatives in the wake of community concerns about a partnership with Lockheed Martin.
“My departure is purely for personal reasons, not political. The Progressive Party in Burlington and Vermont continues to make sure policy discussions reflect the needs and voices of working Vermonters” said Mulvaney-Stanak. “I share the values of the Party and will remain active by mentoring new leadership and assisting in building the foundation for the next chapter of Progressives in Burlington.”
Mulvaney-Stanak will be temporarily moving to Winooski, VT to reside with her finance. Next winter, Mulvaney-Stanak and her partner plan to permanently move back to the Old North End in Burlington, VT.
