  1. I LOVE IT! (my 2nd choice for election year glee – Santorum/Palin ’12)

  2. I have yet to see a worthwhile candidate who would be willing to sign a legal contract that states the promises and the dates the promises will be fulfilled. That ought to put a new competitive edge to this national sport.

  3. Fabulous idea. I will press my senator and state house reps to adopt it.

  4. Brilliant as always!

  5. Criminy. The “kinder, warmer, more human attitudes found in Vermont” can’t be found anywhere in Mr. Danziger’s column. His disdain for certain states in particular is something to behold.

  6. More of Jeff Danzinger!

  7. Mr. Danziger,

Excellent idea! I had a similar thought myself 4 years ago, about an earlier Vermont primary. However, your idea is better: to legislatively and automatically make it the SAME DAY as New Hampshire primary. This works no matter which day NH sets or changes to!

If Vermont did in fact enact your suggestion into law, the only downside would be for those Vermont politicians who while campaigning, EVERY TWO YEARS, must mention the fact that New Hampshire has NO sales tax or income tax. If Vermont received the additional revenue from an earlier President Primary (before the candidates start dropping out), then it might help to lower Vermont’s tax rates. But some politicians seem to like to use New Hampshire comparisons as a campaign issue, and this would negate that tactic to some degree.

C-SPAN has their weekly “Road to the Whitehouse” program. They often feature some restaurant, diner, bar or some tourist attraction in Iowa, New Hampshire, et al. So these states also get “free advertising” via C-SPAN. Vermont should join in! Vermont is a Dairy State and we should try to muscle in on New Hampshire’s “Sacred Cow”.

  8. Jeff,
Are you suggesting Vermont lowering itself to the level of New Hampshire regarding primaries? It would be a tragedy. A gross waste of money and other resources.
A better approach would be to abolish the Vermont state lottery to show the NH folks that the VT folks do not exploit poor people.
