  1. This story is so deep and so ugly. I learned of the City Manager’s effort to suspend the Police Chief at my first city council meeting and my first executive session. Having followed said corrupt Chief for years in my role as owner of the now defunct Winooski Eagle, I was astounded. I predicted that night that all kinds of mayhem would ensue. I had seen him in action. Sure enough, within 24 hours, the city council is having a special meeting with the City Attorney who arrives to “reveal” a sex harrassment issue with the Manager. No evidence. No crime after a Kerin Stackpole investigation ($6,000 tax payer dollars). Just the beginning of a drum beat of persecution from the team of Billy O’Brien, his twin sister Mary Bushee (who was city manager during the year of McQueen’s no-bid contracts that led to his dismissal). Executive session materials going door-to-door for citizen’s petitions…that are welcomed in public by our Mayor Billy and Mary’s cousin. I could go on and on and on. I’ll wait until the final law suit. But let me say this; I learned Josh Handverger was Jewish during the 3rd “special meeting” of the city council that the mayor called to address his “concerns.”

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
