  1. The Vermont McNeil and Ryegate plants have an efficiency of about 26%.
In Germany, new technologies for biomass plants have increased the efficiency to from 25-30% to 33-35.5% using a non-reheat steam cycle and up to 36.4 % (gross) with reheat in condensing operation.

It would be wise to build the North Springfield 25 MW plant to the more advanced German technology, instead of Vermonters trying to reinvent the wheel. The German technology allows for different waste streams, not just wood chips.

  2. Thanks for the comment regarding the German Design- the 3 biomass plants reviewed in the document referenced are from Foster Wheeler- and I (Senior Technical Director for the North Springfield project) am very familiar with these systems and agree that the additional combustion equipment processes can improve the overall efficiency. We will be using a bubbling fluidized bed (bfb) the same type as the German’s have used- and yes we plan on utilizing improved designs such as the superheater. We are also planning to use a chip preheating system that has been very successful in Scandinavia biomass systems.
