  1. I wouldn’t spend much time enjoying the warm fuzzies from all those thank you’s to State workers. It’s painfully obvious – just listen to Jeb spaulding’s interview on the Mark Johnson show – that the State plans to go directly to State workers’ already empty wallets to bail the State out of trouble again.

Forget asking the people who haven’t given a darn thing, forget asking corporations to pony up, forget using the legendary rainy day fund, forget raising revenues from those mysterious “job creators”, forget that you gave your top appointees huge raises. Do the easy thing instead of the right thing and go after public employees. First make sure you denigrate them in the public by exploiting a non-issue like the emergency pay a handful of State workers rightfully felt they were owed.

  2. Right on! – Arthur Hamlin!!! The Vtdigger article states:”Smith is not keen to pass a bill nixing teacher’s strikes and board imposition of contracts.” In other words he’s not keen to emulate Scott Walker of Wisconsin – Thank heavens for small favors – however, that wheedling use of the words “not keen” does not inspire confidence. The article goes on to say: “Both Governor Shumlin and Armando Vilaseca, Commissioner of the Department of Education, have expressed interest in legislation limiting the amount of time students are out of sessiion because of strikes….” In other words, reading between the lines, the Governor and Mr. Vilaseca would consider strike breaking and union busting ala Scott Walker. Yet again, I ask, what cynical game is Shumlin playing? First, demonizing state workers fighting for their rights and now, this. But, in contrast to the purposefully murky rhetoric of the Governor and Mr.Vilaseca is the straightforward position of Rep.johanna Donovan (Dem. Burl.), Cahair of the House Ed. Committee who, as indicated in the article, “is pro union and would not take up such a measure!” Brava!!!!

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
