  1. This is not at all surprising. Shumlin has long been a foe of labor and that’s why VSEA endorsed Doug Racine to begin with. Furthermore, when Sumlin tapped Jeb Spaulding as his Sec. of Administration, the state workforce and VSEA should have known that their fate was sealed. Spaulding has long been in favor of eliminating all benefits for state employees and reducing their pay down to minimum wage levels. Spaulding was one of the key architects of the Douglas administrations hostile relationship with the state workforce and has a basic anti-labor philosophy. Shumlin and Spaulding, along with HR Comissioner Kate Duffy are just as rabidly anti-labor as those in the Douglas administration, and just as vicious. They just do it with a smile on their faces. That Spaulding “flatly denies that charge, and said recently that the governor wants to restore the 3 percent pay cut” is just one more dishonest statement from this administration. If this were the case, the Administration would not have chosen to go to war with the workforce in the press. I am somewhat surprised that VSEA hasn’t taken legal action agaist the adminstration for its attempts to intimidate certain state empoloyees in the press. That names were published and documents leaked by Shumlin and his goons goes beyond pale and would seem to be an unfair labor practice at the very least and possibly an abuse of office criminal issue.

  2. You needed to mention the additional 1.3% of pay that is now being deducted from all State workers paychecks saving the State more than $5 million in retirement contributions. When the 3% pay cut, step freezes, increased retirement contribution, and almost 10% increase in health insurance premiums are figured most State workers have seen pay cuts in excess of five to seven percent. Don’t forget that Governor Shumlin refused to increase taxes on the richest 1% of Vermonters, yet publicly claims to support the 99%.

  3. The headline is a little deceiving though. “Frays” is a huge understatement. The realtionship between the Shumlin administration and the workforce has been demolished. Shumlin has let his true colors show and the workforce now knows him for what he truely is. There is no going back. The workforce now knows that whenever Shumlin, Spaulding or Duffy open their mouths, lies most likely are whats coming out.

  4. When a business or individual is not making a profit they cut staff or cut back. The VSEA does not appear to understand that the state “profits” come from taxes, and many Vermonters are hard pressed to pay. It may be time to cut back on state services and employees.

  5. Only in Vermont do we find labor backed by Republicans and disdain for labor by a Democratic Governor. With his $10000000 bank roll we have a one percenter guarding the 99%, this is a train wreck waiting to happen.
As for Spaulding say goodbye to your carreer in politics, the voters will cast you to the dogs in the next election, as I for one will not ever vote for him again.
Shummy should count on just one term too.

  6. I’ve been watching this conversation about the state hospital for years and I wonder why Mr. Shumlin is now backing away from the commissioner’s plan to construct a new state hospital in Berlin. That was what Olivier said early in the year. I personally know somebody in our system and I don’t want to drive to Brattleboro. I could almost not get to Waterbury alot. I like the people who work at the state hospital too and why don’t they stay working? Will they? Too many questions when I thought Olivier had a plan.
