  1. “Kiss continued along a pragmatic yet somewhat progressive path – lean budgets, “modest growth” and innovations like Burlington Telecom, a municipal cable television operation.”

What does this poorly constructed sentence even mean? Does the writer mean that that Kiss proposed and started BT? I don’t live in Burlington but I’m aware the BT is an operation that began during Clavelle’s administration. It was proposed to and passed by the voters of Burlington. Was there a choice not to “continue on the path” of Burlington Telecom?

And it appears Mr. Guma has an opinion about politics in Burlington judging by the last sentence. But do the readers of Digger care what his opinion is? Does Digger have an editor? Is Greg Guma the best you can do for reports from Burlington?

  2. “Mulvaney-Stanak adamantly opposed a move away from party-based voting. “Parties provide useful information,” she said.”

Yeah, it means you can vote without thinking. You can just vote for whoever the Prog is, based on the “P” label attached to his or her name, without actually having to know anything about the individual candidate. That’s totally irresponsible. Mulvaney-Stanak is endorsing irresponsible, Boss Tweed-style politics. Congratulations.

    Abolish parties. Abolish party labels.

  3. Instant Runoff Voting makes party labels much less relevant. The problem is that people in Burlington were buffaloed into rejecting a voting system because they had a bad case buyer’s remorse.

The real solution was to vote in a different mayor – not do away with a voting system that allows folks to vote for what they want as opposed to voting against what they don’t.

  4. This article is full of typos (I hope) and wrong information. Dave HartNETT (not Hartwell) deserves to have his name correctly spelled and I believe that it has been a few years if not more since Kurt Wright worked at Kerry’s. Was this just lazy reporting or poor proofreading? Regardless, it does not bode well for the veracity of the rest of the article.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
