  1. I have no problem with Mr. Salmon making a political decision not to run for Senate. He would not win. Similarly he has decided not to run for governor and I feel sure that in the midst of the reconstruction due to Irene’s devastation he knows he would not defeat the incumbent. Perhaps he feels that he can audit the restoration programs and find issues on which to hang his hat in the next election cycle. Nevertheless while he is in the Auditor’s office, I would like to see him dedicate additional significant time to medicare fraud. In those states where significant investigative forces were devoted to that task it easily returned more than the costs and sent a message that deterred future criminal fraud. This would truly benefit the people of the state.

    1. Medicare fraud is handled by the Attorney Generals office

  2. You either run for office because you believe in the job you’re seeking, or you don’t.

When one dances around hoping to find the right opportunity they become known as an opportunist.

If Mr. Salmon truly believes that he would make a better US Senator or Gov. of Vt than the people currently holding those positions then he should stand up for what he believes and run against them.

It begs the question what is it that he believes in? He’s starting to come across as just another ambitious politician who wants to hold a higher office for the sake of holding higher office.

I’m not sure that’s what we need right now.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
