  1. A question from a school board member: If we receive less money from the feds for education … what will the governor’s response be?

    a) Go into control freak mode believing that all good big answers must be centralized and come from the governor’s office.

    b) Go into sensible mode and help the local districts find local answers that make local sense.

Okay, I confess to an attempt at influencing your answer with my wording, but what we will need is answer b.

  2. What on earth does this mean?

“Still, Kavet says he and Jeffrey Carr, the economist for the Shumlin administration, are not rushing to move ahead with a downgrade in revenues, but “they have heightened attention to that possibility.”

  3. What if sales, marketing and advertising expenses were not, or just 50% deductible from taxable incomes?

A major fluff part of the economy would shrink.

Increased funds would be available for investing in the improved productivity of producing goods and services.

The state would likely collect more taxes.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
