  1. Hi Don. As usual, an excellent post.

    I posted about this yesterday.

One of the major points of my post was that this CVPS purchase is merely a short-term Power Purchase Agreement, such as utilities do all the time. Small amount of power, short term, usually NOT announced the press, because it is one of those necessary but temporary things.

For example, CVPS is happy that this power purchase will help them get through the upcoming VY refueling outage. And if VY was guaranteed to stay on-line? CVPS would STILL have done a small deal like this, because of the refueling outage.

I think CVPS wanted publicity (we are taking care of our customers and replacing Yankee power!) and they got egg on their face instead. As you know, the power “out there” on the grid is mostly fossil. So, “what kind of power” is pretty much certain:to be fossil. There’s not 600 MW times 90 percent capacity factor (Vermont Yankee) of renewable power out there on the grid.

If people want to delude themselves that VY can be replaced with renewables that is a triumph of wishful thinking. And there’s a lot of that going around…Though the usual response is that “right NOW it can’t be replaced with renewables, but give renewables a year or two.”

(How about more like 20 years? That’s the amount of time it took Germany and Denmark to get up to 20% renewables…)

l am putting in a link to my blog, though I may be accused of Blatant Self Promotion. Ah well, I have been accused of worse things. I just want people to be able to see my discussion of Power Purchase Agreements more easily. You know, figures and charts and stuff like that. I’m a bit of a numbers person.

  2. Meredith,

(How about more like 20 years? That’s the amount of time it took Germany and Denmark to get up to 20% renewables…)

Correction: It took Germany about 11 years to get to 7% wind
Correction: It took Denmark about 30 years to get to 20% wind, of which they export 11% to Sweden, Norway and Germany and consume 9% themselves.

As we speak about 30 Danish are sleeping in tents in a northern Denmark forest to prevent construction from starting on wind turbines that are 833 ft (250 m) tall, with rotors that are over 400 ft in diameter. Note, these units have a useful service life of about 20 years. Insanity!

BTW: Blatant self promotion is good, especially if you have something worthwhile to communicate, as is always the case with you.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
