The Vermont State Agency of Transportation is announcing that all state highways that were closed due to the flooding of May 26 will all be open by June 10. “Our district personnel have been working extremely hard since the flooding occurred to get these vital links in our transportation system back open for the public,” said Sue Minter, Deputy Secretary of VTrans. “I can’t thank our district forces enough for working around the clock in some instances to keep Vermont’s roadways open and repairing the damage done by these intense storms,” Minter further commented.
Route 5 in Barnet is set to open later this afternoon once the contractor has finished installing the guardrail. This portion of Route 5 was washed out during the flash floods of May 26 and will be unpaved for about a week; VTrans will install signs indicating a lower speed is required and that there is a bump as vehicles transition between road surfaces. The plan is to pave this section of roadway next week, completing the repairs to reopen the road.
Route 36 in St. Albans is set to open by noon on June 10. The VTrans district personnel have been hard at work trying to make this road passable for residents who live along the lake. The district forces have used 20 tons of hot mix asphalt and 500 tons of road base to make the roadway passable. Another 33 tandem truck loads of rip rap were employed to armor the road from further erosion from wind-driven waves. A similar armoring of roadway abutting the lake along the Route 2 causeway in South Hero and along Route 129 at Isle La Motte was used to keep both highways from collapsing into the lake.
Route 14 in central Vermont will be open by the afternoon commute on June 10. This section of roadway experienced a significant washout from the floods. The roadway will be opened but will remain unpaved for a week or so to give time for the new base to be compacted by the vehicles traveling over it.
Route 125 in Addison County was also opened today.
