Hunger Free Vermont Launches 14Free Video Project
May 02, 2011 (South Burlington , VT) – According to the US Census, Vermont has some of the most severe hunger in the country. 1 in 5 Vermonters regularly experience skipped meals or insufficient quality or quantity of meals. This recurring and involuntary lack of access to food can lead to malnutrition over time—which can be detrimental to health and development. However, Vermont is also home to many innovative models that end hunger on a daily basis and promote the overall health of communities.
“Every day at Hunger Free Vermont we hear the individual stories of hunger in our state,” remarks Marissa Parisi , Executive Director of Hunger Free Vermont. Parisi continues, “While this motivates us to do our work, where we find our inspiration is from the success stories—the stories from the field that illustrate our vision for how innovative nutrition programs can end hunger and malnutrition in Vermont .”
Hunger Free Vermont has set out to share these success stories with all Vermonters. This year, Parisi and her team will visit schools, child care centers, summer programs, senior centers, and community based organizations—one in each of Vermont’s fourteen counties—and produce short films on each. Hunger Free Vermont is calling this project 14Free as it is their vision to make each of Vermont ’s fourteen counties hunger-free.
“We hope that viewers of our video project will be inspired by these on-the-ground solutions to hunger,” comments Parisi, “and be inspired to work with Hunger Free Vermont, a central hub for these solutions. Hunger is a public health issue that can be solved in our lifetime and with the community’s help we believe we can make widespread and lasting change.”
