  1. I’m glad to know about this although I still don’t know when it happened (and I certainly didn’t know about it BEFORE it happened so I might consider whether or not to attend. THAT’s a big problem! Thanks Sylvia & vtdigger for keeping us informed!

  2. Last night, February 14th, I experienced for the first time, what it’s like to hear the heart of Vermont’s people from all over the state, via V.I.T. and the miracle of modern technology. I was moved and I hope that the Legislators will be also, because the effects of this cut will not only effect the people who are in programs now, but for those who will need these type of programs when they get older. My grandchildren deserve the same opportunities when they are young adults as these young people who testified have now. This only increases the fears of a world that is already concerned about its future.
I don’t envy those who are in the position to make change happen.

  3. Why isn’t increasing taxes being considered? Dick Snelling did that when he was gov. My husband and I kept telling our legislators that tax increases need to happen. But the card we got from the VT Tax Department tell said for individual income tax paers, There is a rate reduction for 2010 tax year and new rules for capital gains exclusion calculation.nThis is not the time to reduce government spending on our neighbors who need it. And reducing government employment means less folks with money to buy cars and refrigerators, and more people collecting from the depleted unemployment fund. This doesn’t make good economic sense, and is shameful.

  4. I’ve used the interactive television before with meetings. It’s pretty wild. I just wish that, in this country that was once the richest nation on earth, that someone would have the political guts to say we need to raise taxes bit until such time as we get this thing under control. I wish that the federals in D.C. would not so quickly cave in to tax cuts for the billionaires to invest in off-shore banks. I know shumlin has political guts, but all of this seems unnecessarily savage. I just hope it is temporary.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
