  1. Terrific article! Thanks. And John Blofeld also wrote a wonderful book called THE CHINESE ART OF TEA.

  2. This is a great article that should be read by all school superintendents and college presidents. What values are we promoting with the nationwide addiction to football?

  3. I couldn’t agree more completely!

  4. This is far and away the most ridiculous piece ever written about the great sport of American Football. I sincerely hope the Terry Allen who wrote this is not the former Redskin back who was so productive in the Mid 90′s. Rather a woman named Terry who is preoccupied by male genitalia and is indeed confused by the down and distance inticaces of the sport.

  5. With regards to sports, and football in particular, even the NFL has recognized that they have a problem and have taken steps to address it. Reported in Oct. 20, 2010
    NEW YORK (AP)
“The NFL will immediately begin suspending players for dangerous and flagrant hits that violate rules, particularly those involving helmets.”
    The story continued with,
“In the past, players were either fined or ejected for illegal hits. But after the series of recent flagrant tackles, several of which resulted in concussions, the NFL ramped up the punishment ”for egregious and elevated hits,” Anderson said. (Ray Anderson, VP of NFL football operations)
A similar position is needed at all levels of the sport.

This opinion piece really needed a less sensational approach and more research.

  6. Even though I’ve played it, I guess I have never understood football. A dozen or so behemoths on a line that get precious little credit for what they do, rush and pound on each other for four quarters so that a few other guys that get all the credit, that go into the hall of fame and all that, can move a ball here and there around a field. It’s not to denigrate what a Tom Brady or a Randy Moss can do, but at least in something like rugby or soccer everyone on the team plays more or less equally. It’s probably strange and unpatriotic to think that way, but I always have when watching this murderous sport.

But the author also raises a valid point about attaining the wealth paid to athletes that attain the pinnacle and make billions manhandling each other, or trying sink a ball in a basket, or swing a bat at an onrushing ball, while we keep cutting and gutting the salaries of our teachers. It’s probably unpatriotic to think that way, but I do.

  7. There are many an athlete who aspire to play for the beauty of the game. Surely fame and fortune is a lure for some but many cherish privacy and are most giving with their earnings. Certainly true for soccer.
