  1. This is a thorough, insightful profile. Thanks, Anne!

  2. At least Doug is being realistic. I hope it works.

  3. The right guy at the right time…as to the Markowitz comment of counting on the “woman’s vote”. This woman doesn’t vote for anyone based on their gender. It has to be the right person with the right ideas. THIS IS THE GUY, or so says this woman…

  4. The state government needs to be downsized from 7,000 employees to about 5,500 to be in line with New Hampshire. It will costs less.

Vermont’s economy will not be growing much for the next 5 years; it cannot support the current government.

Legislators must stop voting for programs that have financial incentives (gifts, tax credits, faster write-offs, low cost loans, etc.) that the state cannot afford to pay for without cutting other critical programs and/or without further raising taxes, fees, and imposing special efficiency charges on electric bills.

    1. Comparing Vermont to NH is not valid. Vermont has no County government so more state employees are needed to provide the services. And do you really want Vermont to look like NH? Unfortunately, under Jim Douglas cuts have been random and across the board. Hungry Vermonters now have to wait 90 days to get about $1 per meal from foodstamps, while Jim=Jobs takes $61 day for lunch money from the taxpayers. Thank goodness the Legislature stopped Douglas from raising property taxes and selling the lottery to Lehman Bros!

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
