Dubie Says Markowitz Misses the Mark on Public Safety
Essex Junction, VT – Brian Dubie today said Deb Markowitz’s four-point plan for law enforcement ignores the most critical public safety issue in Vermont.
“We can all agree on the four priorities she outlines; unfortunately, she doesn’t even mention the most important public safety issue for Vermont families – making sure our children are kept safe from child sexual predators,” Dubie said.
Dubie noted that Vermont has consistently been recognized as one of the safest states in the country, with the lowest rate of violent crime. But he is concerned by the prevalence of crimes against children, in which even one case is too many.
“In a world challenged by finite financial resources, expanding and funding special investigative units such as CUSI will be a top budget priority for the Dubie Administration,” Dubie said. “Men and women in law enforcement will have the resources they need to protect Vermonters, especially our most vulnerable.”
As lieutenant governor, Dubie has been a champion for protecting children. In 2008, he spearheaded the largest petition drive in Vermont’s history, in which nearly 60,000 Vermonters joined him in pushing for legislation to protect innocent children from sexual predators.
“That petition led to reform, but we have more work to do,” Dubie said. “We need to have the toughest laws in the country, including mandatory life imprisonment for second-time violent sexual offense against a child. Leadership is about setting priorities, and when it comes to public safety, no issue is more important. Our state is judged by how well we protect our most vulnerable.”
