  1. Five years from today, a fair to significant number of Vermont’s smaller schools will be closed and consolidated.

And, Vermont’s student-to-teacher ratio will move from its current 10.9:1 to something closer to that of the national average of 15.5:1. Moving to a ratio of 13:1 saves some $100 million; moving to the national average saves some $200 million.

When famed bank robber Willie Sutton was asked, “why do you rob banks,” his response: “because that’s where the money is.”

75% of Vermont’s budget is tied up in Human Services and Education, roughly half to each with a slight advantage to human services.

Some one third of Vermont’s budget comes from the federal government; and more in the form of grants and goodies derived from our congressional delegation.

Earth to Montpelier…the federal government is broke.

This is all simple math; with projected Vermont FY 2012 revenue projections to be at 2006 levels.

All that is required is for Montpelier to take off its blinders.

Dreams of unicorns and rainbows are no more.

A plan of action was presented in my March 2009 testimony in front of Vermont’s House Ways and Means committee.

Might I suggest representatives revisit that testimony?

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
