  1. Cheap locked in illegal labor is part of the reason farms are able to flood the market with cheap milk, driving down prices and making more honest farmers unable to afford to pay living wages.

  2. I could support the idea of a blue card, but not one that leads to a green card. After one to three years these workers should go home. Under Leahy’s plan, we could have up to 6.75 million people in this country after five years who could stay permanently. That’s a lot of people for a country that is already afflicted with congestion, sprawl and resource depletion. Moreover, after these folks got their green cards, they might well move on to other jobs, requiring another program to bring in more farm workers. In the long run, the solution is better wages for farmers and farm workers.

  3. Clarification: the bill allows a total of 1.35 million blue cards over 5 years, not per year. But with spouses and children, the number of people covered by this could be in the millions.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
