Illinois Youth Volunteer at Good News Garage
Burlington, Vermont, Tuesday, June 8, 2010: a group of 50-plus people, mostly high schoolers, from Our Savior Lutheran Church, Naperville , Ill. , will arrive in Burlington to volunteer in three area non-profits, including Good News Garage, a program of Lutheran Social Services. The students are members of the church’s youth choir and puppeteering troupe. They will also volunteer for Bike Recycle Vermont and Puppets in Education.
“We are in constant pursuit of new ways to challenge youth to . . . live out our faith,” shares Dan Beirne, youth director, who heads up the youth ministry program. “This trip has been a great learning experience for them.”
The young people will gather at Good News Garage on North Winooski Avenue at 10:30 am. Some of them will remain at the garage and wash donated vans and cars inside and out. These cleaned up vehicles will be provided to qualified Vermonters who need affordable, reliable transportation, as part of Good News Garage’s donated wheels program.
Other members of the group will head to Local Motion’s Bike Recycle Vermont program, located on the lower level of Good News Garage, where they will clean and sort bike parts. Bike Recycle Vermont repairs donated bikes and provides them to low-income residents.
The third nonprofit, Puppets in Education, formerly known as Kids on the Block, will employ members of the group to type scripts for puppet shows and prepare the puppets to share important life lessons with school-age children in Vermont .
A couple members of the group will photograph and record the group’s volunteer experience. Their works will be posted on Good News Garage’s Web site and Facebook page. The young volunteers’ day will end with a pizza party.
