  1. I think Poirier is nuts. He’s proposing another tax at a time when Vermonters are already taxed throug the teeth, but hey this guy has never seen a tax he didn’t like.

  2. Its time for the democrats to start acting like democrats and not like republicans in discusige. They need to adhea to a more liberal agenda and have so political wil to raise taxes. A budget is a document of VALUES. Inclusion is a birth right
Protecting the most vulnerable is not a lugury.
    Raise taxes yes we can

  3. Finally! Thank you Rep. Poirer for understanding what people have been saying for years. It is truly sad that as much as Gov. Douglas has already cut state workers and decimated public services it’s apparently still not enough. Even sadder is how the Democratic leadership in Montpelier have caved in and thrown state government under a bus called Challenges for Change.

  4. Senator Shumlin, what can be done with Challenges? Did Douglas outgame the democratic house? Or has Douglas been outgamed? And how do you think the house will re-act to S.88′s coming up in this challenges atmosphere? What about the idea of temporarily raising taxes on those that can best afford them?

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
