Federal Funds Available for Afterschool Supper Programs
MONTPELIER – The Vermont Department of Education announces that Vermont ’s school-aged children will now have access to a nutritious supper through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Vermont is one of only 13 states and the District of Columbia to participate in the Area Eligible Afterschool Supper Pilot through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
CACFP already provides snacks to give a nutritional boost to children through age 18 in eligible afterschool programs in lower income areas in every state. This pilot program also provides supper as an additional meal benefit in afterschool programs in some states.
Schools and child care centers are eligible to participate if they are located at sites where at least 50 percent of the children in the school attendance area are eligible for free and reduced price meals. Programs that wish to sponsor an after school meals program must be located in an eligible area and offer educational or enrichment activities after the end of the school day, meet licensing requirements or health and safety requirements, and serve meals and snacks that meet the USDA requirements. Reimbursement for supper is currently 2.68 per meal and 74 cents for snack.
The nutritionally balanced supper will include milk, a meat/meat alternate, fruit, vegetables and a bread or grain item. Snacks must include two of the four meal components. Reimbursable meals can be served to school children through age 18. There are no application forms for families to complete and the meals and snacks are served to children in the afterschool program at no additional charge.
