This governor is a slave to ideology and exhibits no compassion and little common sense. The continuing calls to “do more with less”, “live within our means”, and “make tough choices”, are hollow in the face of his absolute refusal to ask more of the wealthy.

Sadly, the legislature appears unwilling to do so either.

As Mr. Gordon said, it is indeed a moral question. What does this say about our values? Are these the lessons we want to teach children? It’s really quite sad.

    Doug, I couldn’t agree more.

The governor is also canny and wants to benefit his rich patrons before he leaves office. He wants to squeeze everything that he can out of us so that his wealthy friends can get even richer. Ever since Ronald Reagan, it has been to transfer wealth from the poorest to the richest, from the most vulnerable to the least vulnerable. That has been the whole aim of the gop, of our government, to take from the poor and give to the rich.

It is still odd, though, that Shap, who beat Douglas twice last year, seems to be going along with it so far.

America is not the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is land of the corporate, home of the exploited. Vermont is not freedom and unity if you are below Douglas’s class.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don’t accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don’t support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn’t a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
