Bah, sour grapes from a very defensive organizer. Everyone has a different view of even the most simple event. Keep digging!

Elderly, smelderly. What the lead should have said was that forty likely voters turned out to hear the gubernatorial candidates since older people vote in higher numbers that any other age group.

The demographic make-up of a particular political meeting is significant and relevant. The word “elderly” should not have been censored from Steve’s article, but the word “mostly” should have been added in front of it. The group mostly consisted of elderly people. That is a significant piece of information. I want to know that in learning about a particular meeting or candidate. It is a descriptive term that tells me something about the event. The paper should not have self-censored to appease a political operative. Steve’s instincts in covering the meeting were correct; he just needed a modifyer before “elderly.” That is the real concern that I have with this situation. Censorship under pressure from political organizations is very dangerous.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don’t accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don’t support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn’t a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
