  1. The US government has degenerated into the world’s largest international organized crime syndicate. It is served by legions of thugs who spread murder abroad and tyranny at home. Decent people should want no part of it. Let’s hope the freedom fighters in Vermont are successful. Imagine what your life could be like without it. No I.R.S. to steal the fruits of your labor, no D.E.A. to tell you what you can or can’t grow, no A.T.F. to prevent you from defending yourself, no D.H.S. spying on your phone calls and Email – the list is endless. If you don’t feel suffocated by the presence of the US governments daily intrusions into you life, there is something wrong with you. Imagine….Free Vermont.

  2. One correction at first glance – you say GMD reacted to “an alleged connection between the Second Vermont Republic and neo-Confederate ideology.” This is incorrect.

There was no “allegation” whatsoever. That’s, unfortunately, a line frequently peddled by the folks who didn’t like what we had to say (and in the case of Thomas Naylor, who felt strongly enough to repeatedly attempt to retaliate against me through my personal life. His harassment has in fact continued in the intervening years).

We reacted to the open connections (shown, for example, at

    http://www.vermontrepublic.org/about/advisory_board

and exemplified by some of the pieces on Vermont Commons website that read as pro-segregation:

or that have appeared in print – such as this creepy piece from notorious UVM Professor Thomas Griffin which, among other things, rails against “holocaust promoters”

These were and are open (not “alleged”) connections between SVR, Vermont Commons, and members of the League of the South and other organizations identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as “neo-confederate.”

The leaders of SVR/VC have never denied this connection, they just see it as OK. From their perspective as I understand it, they only associate with these people and organizations on the topic of secession. To me, my fellows at GMD and our readers, one simply cannot cleanly separate the practitioners of this kind of vile racism from that racism, and as such we found the associations disturbing. That was the beginning and the end of our issue.

That’s really it. There have never been any “allegations.” They partner with these folks at various levels. We don’t think its okay. Period. Unfortunately, SVR and VC find the very voicing of such an opinion to be deeply threatening, and choose to respond by attacking in the most venomous ways they can. Naylor himself, from looking at his website, has become personally obsessed with me, although of late his obsession has largely shifted to Bill McKibben, who also had the nerve to speak critically of his associations.

  3. Was walking by the Stateshouse, last summer I think, and saw Bread & Puppet people, LOVE Bread & Puppet, MR S and all so had to go check it out. They were with the 2nd VT Republic at their gathering at the Statehouse, thought what a strange combination. Listened and was not put off at all. They loved Bernie, I love Bernie, I love Ron Paul and I love Progressive government, makes no sense.

  4. This piece reads like a re-work of the standard SVR press release.

As Odum points out, the “allegations” are really so much more than that. Naylor’s repeated guest spots on the racist, Holocaust denying, white supremacist, online radio program of James Edwards, “The Political Cesspool,” is a prime example of the kind of support gathering that Naylor engages in.

Thomas Naylor’s phony polling is examined here and here.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has more on Naylor here and here (and make sure that you read Naylor’s southern charm on display at the very end).

Perhaps you might dig a little deeper next time.

  5. The first thought that comes to my mind when listening to this or any other talk directed towards secession is this. Huh?!. Above all else I am a realist meaning ,I think ,that I live in the real world. Unlike those in our state and county who don’t. Heres my point, if only ten percent of Vermonters don’t want to seceed from the USA then that probably means war… and heres where I dont get this whole debate. You cannot seceed peacefully if only one person asks the USA to help keep the “colonies” together. Any realist understands this . Beyond this point , all else is just talk. Period.
