  1. With all due respect to Ms. Curcio, who came here from elsewhere in 1994, where does she think all those people who annoy her have come from? Not from the Northeast Kingdom, I assure you. For people who penny-pinch from necessity — not because it’s fashionable at the moment — Walmart makes life a little easier. I live in a town with no Starbuck’s and no sushi. Maybe Ms. Curcio needs to get out of Chittenden County more often.

  2. What an excellent piece of writing! If you think Vermont has changed in fifteen years you should have been here almost fifty years ago as I have been. Vermont looks, feels, and culturally is nothing like it was back then.
To learn how this has actually been documents read the Disappearing Vermont? report on the Vermonters for a Sustainable Population web site http://www.vspop.org That was my home on the cover back then and what the area looks like today.

Thanks very much for telling this dramatic story. If we keep on growing the U.S. and Vermont population Vermont will look and feel more like New Jersey and not just in Chittenden County

  3. I don’t disagree with your fear for the state of the state, but take a bigger sample. As far as your Vermont observations go it really wouldn’t hurt to travel around and take a larger look around for credibility sake at least.
Vermont is much more than the subtle divide between “Have mores” and “Have lesses” you see. Get out and find some “Have nones” in a “Have none” town. Find some place where Dunkin Donuts is the new Dunkin Donuts.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
