Thanks for this little gem of an article. I built a brand new house four years ago, and the cluster flies were so thick that we had to bomb them in order to get four coats of polyurethane on the pine floors. We considered leaving them in the flooring for traction. But that would have been just too darn ugly.

So it doesn’t matter if your house is new or old, the little xxx???***&&& will find you anyway. Some have told me it has to do with soil conditions? Rusty Dewees has a skit about them in “the Logger” (or at least he used to), and he says it’s not the buzzing, it’s when they stopped and you’re just waiting for them to start up again…. He did a fine imitation of a cluster fly.

Carol Castle in Derby told me that she killed them off with borax — but she didn’t have the right ratio of borax to water and killed the grass at the same time. That’s right! She spread the borax — or sprayed it like fertilizer or insecticide — over the grass near the house, as she claims they breed there and THEN get into the house since they can go in around windows by folding up their wings– I’ve witnessed this phenomenom. So, someone must know the borax/water ratio!
HELP!!! This is a cheap and safe remedy that really works!

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don’t accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don’t support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn’t a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
